While there is no “set” age for children to begin orthodontic treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. This is generally when the first permanent molars and incisors have come in and the orthodontist can evaluate potential problems such as crossbites and crowding. With early treatment, an orthodontist can guide the growth of the jaw and help guide incoming permanent teeth.
